Birth of Texas Documentary Series
The Birth of Texas is a series of feature length documentaries that chronicle the journey from Spanish Texas, along the road to Revolution, through the days of the Republic and on to statehood. The goal is to provide a comprehensive video resource that tells the total diverse story of Texas' beginnings in an artful and professional manner utilizing the top scholars and historians in the field. The films engage people in Texas history. The first seven films in the eight part series are complete, but NHM is thrilled to announce that, in 2024, we will be completely updating the Houston: A Nation's Capital title which was the first we produced. The remake will add new material and images. Following that, we will complete part eight entitled Austin and the Republic. Night Heron Media is very excited about this news!
Comprehensive
These documentaries cover the complete social, political and military stories from this formative period in Texas history. The videos not only explore the famous actions at the Alamo, Goliad and San Jacinto including recent breakthroughs in scholarship and archaeology, but also the roles played by Tejanos, American settlers, filibusterers, enslaved African-Americans, European immigrants and foreign governments in shaping our state. From camp site to battlefield to legislative halls, the stories are here.
History Tourism
Because each documentary is designed around a sense of place, with noted author and historian, Stephen Hardin, leading a tour of locations at which the important events in this period of Texas history took place, there is a strong element of history tourism. Scores of people who watched the completed Houston segment have raved about the tangible aspect of the story telling. These films will put Texans on the road to visit these locations and learn firsthand about the beginnings of Texas.
Wide Audience
The documentaries in this series are designed to air as feature length films on PBS stations and educational TV outlets across Texas. At the same time, they are segmented so that they fit easily into a classroom setting. More than 80 Texas school districts and private schools have utilized the BoT movies to teach history. Teachers may use only the story segments they choose for their classroom. For students and adults alike, this documentary series is the most engaging way to understand this important period in the history of Texas. Support for the Birth of Texas has come from numerous sources that are listed prominently in the film credits, but we especially thank the Texas Historical Foundation and Miki & Dr. Ralph Norton for their generosity in bringing Texans these vital stories from our past.
Many Awards
All seven of the completed Birth of Texas Series documentaries have won prestigious awards for their excellence in production quality and impeccable storytelling. Among them are four Platinum REMI Awards from the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival, one Gold REMI and one Silver REMI. The Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution also presented a Texas Media Award to the Spanish Texas title.
